Gaudy Baron
The Gaudy Baron, scientifically known as Euthalia lubentina, is a striking butterfly belonging to the family Nymphalidae. It is widely found in Sri Lanka, India, and Southeast Asia, especially in forested regions and the lower foothills of the Himalayas. The male has dark greenish-brown wings with brilliant crimson bands and rows of white and black spots, while the female is paler, with larger white patches and greenish-blue shades on the hindwings. When seen in sunlight, the wings reflect a metallic sheen, giving the butterfly a vivid and colorful appearance. The underside of the wings is purplish-brown with softer markings, helping it blend into tree bark when resting.
Gaudy Baron
The Gaudy Baron prefers moist forests and open wooded areas, often flying close to the ground or resting on leaves. The caterpillar is grass-green with small branched spines and purple-brown spots, feeding mainly on plants from the Fabaceae family. Its pupa is green with small brown markings that resemble dried leaves, providing excellent camouflage. This butterfly plays an important role as a pollinator and adds bright colors to the forest ecosystem, making it one of the most admired butterflies in South and Southeast Asia.
